  12. Sound waves - from speaker to ear
It's difficult to visualise sound waves as they are transmitted from a loudspeaker's diaphragms to the listener's ear. Most quality loudspeakers have two or more drive units, and those drivers are mounted in or on an enclosure. But how far do the waves travel from the point of generation, perhaps deep inide the drive unit, to the listener?

This question is related to the observation that in most loudspeakers, the tweeter is fixed flush with the front panel, but that the bass/midrange driver may be mounted flush with, or behind the baffle. One reason why the designer must consider the mounting plane of the bass unit relates to phase - that's a fancy word for time delay.
