This reference monitor takes the best of the original Monitor 40 even further - a tight, dynamic and incredibly revealing presentation at a moderate listening level.

The speaker is completely transparent and paints a 3D holographic sound stage which is totally addictive for its neutrality. (View videos of the speaker's careful development in the Harbeth Research Centre.)

The flagship Harbeth was developed from the hugely respected Monitor 40 widely used in sound editing and broadcasting, and in homes around the world.

The inspiration of the design concept was the BBC LS5/5, the world's first plastic-coned three-way loudspeaker. Although originally developed for professional use in BBC control rooms, the Monitor 40/40.1 has been adopted as a domestic reference system, and where space permits brings the ultimate in natural sound to the serious home listener.

the domestic version is crafted in real wood cherry, rosewood or eucalyptus veneer, and is fitted with two binding post terminals for simplicity and ease of connection. The best possible performance is achieved in a normal domestic room when the Monitor 40.1 is used on appropriately rigid stands in a moderately damped environment and as far away from the wall as possible. The in-room smoothness of response is excellent, and in a suitable room a controlled and realistic bass response down to 25Hz is possible.

It's not easy to ascribe a sonic characteristic to the Monitor 40.1: nor does it have one. Perhaps the concept "three dimensional curtain of sound" says it all.
