HUG - here for all audio enthusiasts

INTRODUCTION- PLEASE READ FIRST TO UNDERSTAND THIS FORUM!

"This Harbeth User Group (HUG) is the Manufacturer's own managed forum dedicated to natural sound, realisable by controlling the confounding variables between tthe microphone and the listeners' ears.

For example, the design of and interaction between the hifi amplifier and its speaker load can and potentially will alter the sound balance of what you hear. To reproduce the sounds captured by the recording microphones, as Harbeth speakers are designed to do, you would naturally select system components (sources, electronics, cables and so on) that do not color the sound before it reaches the speakers.

Identifying components for their system neutrality should, logically, start with the interpretation and analysis of their technical, objective performance, as any and every deviation from a measurably flat frequency response at any point along the serial chain from microphone to ear is very likely to cause the total system to have an audible sonic personality. That includes the contribution of the listening room itself.

HUG specialises in making complex technical matters simple to understand, aiding the identification of audio components likely to maintain a faithful relationship between the recorded sound and the sound you hear. With our heritage of natural sound, HUG cannot be really be expected to guide in the selection, approval, endorsement or even discussion of equipment that is intend to introduce a significantly personalised sound to the audio signal chain. For that you should do your own research and above all, make the effort to visit an Authorised Dealer and listen to your music at your loudness on your loudspeakers through the various electronics offered there. There is no on-line substitute for that time investment in a dealer's showroom.

If you desire to intentionally tune your system sound to your personal taste, please consider carefully how much you should rely upon the subjective opinions of strangers. Their hearing acuity and taste will be different to yours, as will be their motives and budget, their listening distance, listening loudness and listening room treatment, not necessarily leading to appropriate equipment selection and listening satisfaction for you.

Alternatively, if faithfully reproducing the sound intended by the composer, score, conductor and musicians over your speakers is your audio dream, then understanding something of the issues likely to fulfill that objective is what this forum has been helping with since 2006. Welcome!"

  • Factory clearout of old Rogers BBC speakers

    We'll be featuring our recent expansion into the adjacent factory in an upcoming Newsletter. One justification for the move was to give us more production space, another to consolidate the various additional premises we have been renting in the local area for storage and office space. I am charged with responsibility for clearing our general store. In it there are several pairs of Rogers BBC LS5/8 monitors, their matching active QUAD AM8/16 amplifiers, 12" 5/8 bass units and possibly one of two LS5/9 monitors and 5/8-5/9 tweeter spares. These have been traded-in by the BBC/ITV/pro broadcasters at various times for Monitor 40s, 30s and 20s. All we need is one reference pair of LS5/8s (the best being an oak pair from BBC Northern Ireland drama dept.).

    We could, as we have done before, break up these cabinets, save the drive units and reduce the amount of space needed by them. I'd rather find good homes for them complete. We have been told that there is a Rogers forum and maybe someone here would pass this on to them. None of these speaker are in pristine condition; none can be considered perfect, and all the cheap tin buckles of the hand-carry strap on the QUAD amps have rusted although I fully expect the amps to work.

    Our new factory is being painted now and will be racked soon, so we'd like to clear this old historical stuff in the next couple of weeks.

    PLEASE NOTE: The only speakers and parts we have are LS5/8 (= Chartwell PM510 passive), some with AM8/16 active amps and passive LS5/9. No other Rogers models or spare parts - sorry. Prices negotiable as is a contribution to my time for testing any parts/speakers required.

    NOTE 2: The AM8/16s are based on the QUAD 405 amp, with the active filters inside the same case. Some are 405s and some 405/2. The power amp cards and mains transformer/PSU are identical to the original QUAD parts and freely interchangeable with them: all the 'customisation' is in the active filter card bold-ons which if removed, would revert the AM8/16 to the std. 405. If you buy the AM8/16 I would provide full BBC set-up service information.

      2 x 5/8, 2 x AM8/16 (no cables) about GBP300/lot. These items are Alan's own property so you would need to confirm that with him.

          Update

          UPDATE!

          We just do not have the time to allow inspection visits or the like. Nor are we willing to supply to person who will then turn them over to Ebay as we can do that ourselves with a little effort (And perhaps should).

          These speakers are at least 20 years old. They are long out of production.

          They are very specialist units with a particular sound balance that suits a specialist collector *not* a domestic hifi user.

            I am looking for 2 LS5/8 bass-mid drivers

            Hi Alan- do you have a couple of units still available?

            Also, my friend is interested in a pair of complete LS5/8s.

            Thank you very much,

            Justin

              We certainly do have 5/8 woofers. Caution though: for Alan to find and successfully test just two tweeters last week he had to remove and test four from complete 5/8 systems. What should have been a 15 min. task took over an hour. This is reflected in the price.

                OK- great news! How much for 2 of these woofers? I can have a friend collect from you. He works near Haywards Heath. I grew up in Sussex and my surname is Harwood so can I get a family and friends discount?

                Cheers!

                  5/8 plus amps - cost?

                  Hi!

                  is there still a pair of LS5/8 with amps or PM510 available at this time??
                  What would be the price??

                  Best regards
                  Nicolas DELATTE

                  {Moderator's comment: speakers are about GBP 400-600/pair, amps 250/pair I think. The amps have corrosion marks on the case but are check as working (or will be).}

                      {Moderator's comment: we do. Please contact Andy at the factory.}
