"This Harbeth User Group (HUG) is the Manufacturer's own managed forum dedicated to natural sound from microphone to ear, achievable by recognising and controlling the numerous confounding variables that exist along the audio chain. The Harbeth designer's objective is to make loudspeakers that contribute little of themselves to the music passing through them.

Identifying system components for their sonic neutrality should logically proceed from the interpretation and analysis of their technical, objective performance, since deviations from a flat frequency response at any point along the signal chain from microphone to ear is likely to create the audible sonic personality that you hear. This includes the contribution of the listening room itself. To accurately reproduce the recorded sound, as Harbeth speakers are designed to do, you would be advised to select system components (sources, electronics, cables and so on) that do not color the sound before it reaches the speakers.

For example, the design of and interaction between the hifi amplifier and its speaker load can and potentially will alter the sound balance of what you hear. This may or may not be what you wish to achieve, but any deviation from a flat response is a step away from a truly neutral system. HUG has extensively discussed amplifiers and the methods for seeking the most objectively neutral amongst a plethora of available product choices.

HUG specialises in making complex technical matters simple to understand, such as the relationship between recorded sound and the sound you hear. With our heritage of natural sound and pragmatism, HUG cannot be expected to be a place to get deeply into discussing the selection, approval or endorsement of non-Harbeth system elements selected, knowingly or not, to create a significantly personalised sound. For that you should do your own research and above all, make the effort to visit an Authorised Dealer and listen to your music at your loudness on your loudspeakers through the various offerings there. There is really no on-line substitute for time invested in a dealer's showroom because 'tuning' your system to taste is such a highly personal matter.

Please consider carefully how much you should rely upon and be influenced by the subjective opinions of strangers. Their hearing acuity and taste will be different to yours, as will be their motives and budget, their listening distance, loudness and room treatment, not necessarily leading to appropriate equipment selection and listening satisfaction for you.

If some of the science behind faithfully reproducing the sound intended by the composer, score, conductor and musicians over Harbeth speakers is your thing, this forum has been helping with that since 2006. If you just want to share your opinions and photos with others then the unrelated Harbeth Speakers Facebook page may be for you. Either way, welcome to the world of Harbeth!"

  • SHL5 to Italy

A couple of months ago I've ordered from a local dealer a pair of SHL5, after a long decisional process. They told me that I would have to wait for mid may. Then, last week local distributor shifted again the delivery date to end june.

I'm a bit worried that waiting time will be longer and longer, and with summer vacancy, it might lead to this autumn.

Can you please confirm that I've still few days to wait for?

    Thank you very much
    Best regards

    Re: SHL5 to Italy

    Hello Carlo,

I'm sorry to hear that you are still waiting. Actually, we process incoming orders in sequence and we email an Order Confirmation to tell our customers the planned ex-Harbeth date. The confirmed delivery date on our Order Confirmation was set to ex-Harbeth 30 June 09 to allow us to ship the new P3ESR together with other models in one lot with our customer's agreement.

We have a full order book and as we have said before, to serve all our customers we process orders strictly in sequence. This is the only fair way for everybody. Currently we have regular monthly orders from some distributor customers until February 2010.

      Thank you Alan.
I understand you, and I really appreciate your sincerity.
I'll be waiting, what else can I do?
      Thank you again

Hello Alan... is the big day near to come?

To quote Carrie Fischer (The blues Brothers 1980) "I remained celibate for you. I stood at the back of a cathedral, waiting, in celibacy, for you, with three hundred friends and relatives in attendance."

I'm sure that is worth waiting, but now I'm ready : )

        Thank you
        best regards

          Delivery logistics ...

Gosh. That's a big build up.

I'm not really comfortable giving here in the HUG a day-by-day update on a particular customer's order, bypassing the normal channels from end customer backwards to the retailer, then to the imported then to my production colleages. There are many factors to consider - some commercial, some logistical, some governmental, some legal. I regret that this is not the best place to be discussing the complex matter of supplying the distribution chain.

As I understand it, your speakers are built but are part of a larger order. We do not have the authority to part-ship. Therefore, please be so kind as to wait a few more days for the entire order to be built and shipped together with your pair. Yes, it is true that due to a supplier issue we are a few days behind our plan and I apologise for that.

I should add, as a general comment, that unlike many in audio manufacturing, Harbeth doesn not have sales seasons. We are always busy right around the year so their is absolutely no slack in the summer months for us. In fact, we would like to do some painting and decorating in the factory just to freshen here and there, but we cannot schedule even one production-free day.

          Best wishes.
