HUG - here for all audio enthusiasts

"This Harbeth User Group (HUG) is the Manufacturer's own managed forum dedicated to natural sound, realisable by controlling the confounding variables between tthe microphone and the listeners' ears.

For example, the design of and interaction between the hifi amplifier and its speaker load can and potentially will alter the sound balance of what you hear. To reproduce the sounds captured by the recording microphones, as Harbeth speakers are designed to do, you would naturally select system components (sources, electronics, cables and so on) that do not color the sound before it reaches the speakers.

Identifying components for their system neutrality should, logically, start with the interpretation and analysis of their technical, objective performance, as any and every deviation from a measurably flat frequency response at any point along the serial chain from microphone to ear is very likely to cause the total system to have an audible sonic personality. That includes the contribution of the listening room itself.

HUG specialises in making complex technical matters simple to understand, aiding the identification of audio components likely to maintain a faithful relationship between the recorded sound and the sound you hear. With our heritage of natural sound, HUG cannot be really be expected to guide in the selection, approval, endorsement or even discussion of equipment that is intend to introduce a significantly personalised sound to the audio signal chain. For that you should do your own research and above all, make the effort to visit an Authorised Dealer and listen to your music at your loudness on your loudspeakers through the various electronics offered there. There is no on-line substitute for that time investment in a dealer's showroom.

If you desire to intentionally tune your system sound to your personal taste, please consider carefully how much you should rely upon the subjective opinions of strangers. Their hearing acuity and taste will be different to yours, as will be their motives and budget, their listening distance, listening loudness and listening room treatment, not necessarily leading to appropriate equipment selection and listening satisfaction for you.

Alternatively, if faithfully reproducing the sound intended by the composer, score, conductor and musicians over your speakers is your audio dream, then understanding something of the issues likely to fulfill that objective is what this forum has been helping with since 2006. Welcome!"

  • Color appreciation and room treatment

    Hi Infobert,

I really like them in rosewood. What are your room dimensions and which treatment do you plan to do?

    • Room treatment ongoing

      Hi Peter,

thank you. you are completely right. That´s part of the "room treatment" project...

      • Some reflections

        Hi Sebastien,

room dimensions are 4,5x9 meters and listening position is around 3,5m from the speakers. Next to concealing strips I still have some minor challenges with reflections/echoes as the room is "spartan" furnished. But at the end this is moaning on a very very high level...

Why would you want to be cured?:-) I am very glad to be afflicted by the disease.

Nice pic, nice set up, and looks like a great music collection, that you can look to expand with the money saved.

Well, I've always said one day I'll upgrade my P3ES2s to ESRs and have finally done it! Here they are in cherry veneer. Apologies for the horrible TV dominating the room; it's the landlord's and is covering up a hole in the wall and a mess of cables, so it has to stay where it is.

What a blow I have to report! The day my speakers I've been looking forward to all week is the day I go stone deaf in my good ear! (Nothing serious, just wax, but the treatment drops make things worse before the improvement).

Nonetheless I couldn't resist a listen and in spite of everything the audio upgrade is instantly recognisable. A delight.

Congrats Ben. The P3ESR sure looks nice on the Something Solid stands.

                      Well first the disadvantages

1 It is not the punchiest amp around
2 In complex passages it clips

The good points are that it is very very clear....
and the timbre is so spot on

But i want to say a few words to the forum about the bass problems that some
users are experiensing with the M40.1.
I also had these problems ...

                      Hi ANADA,

                      1. why do you think it clips?
Sugden SPA-4 delivers [email protected], do you mean M40.1 sucks more than this?
Because of source (or pre-amp) voltage output exceeds input sensitivity of the power amp?
Sugden SPA-4 is not a "decent" amp?
                      Should I need MPA-4 which delivers 160W for M40.1?

                      2. What dou you mean by bass problem with Sugden-Harbeth match? Did you get excess (boomy) bass; or (thin) lack of bass?
Which (room or amp or speaker) is the main problem?

                              • Amp quest is over!

                                Hi Jmhod

I NEVER refered to the SPA4 but to the Integrated Masterclass which i think is rated at 33w. The Spa4 is the final amp i will ever need to drive any speaker.

It is build like a TANK and has all the Power to retrieve any subtle information from the recordings in min volume. My quest and questions about amplifiers is now finished once for all and since then i dont follow the Blog this is why my answer is also dated
Have a nice day all of you
