INTRODUCTION - PLEASE READ FIRST TO UNDERSTAND THIS FORUM!

"This Harbeth User Group (HUG) is the Manufacturer's own managed forum dedicated to natural sound from microphone to ear, achievable by recognising and controlling the numerous confounding variables that exist along the audio chain. The Harbeth designer's objective is to make loudspeakers that contribute little of themselves to the music passing through them.

Identifying system components for their sonic neutrality should logically proceed from the interpretation and analysis of their technical, objective performance. Deviations from a flat frequency response at any point along the signal chain from microphone to ear is likely to give an audible sonic personality to the system at your ear; this includes the significant contribution of the listening room itself. To accurately reproduce the recorded sound as Harbeth speakers are designed to do, you would be best advised to select system components (sources, electronics, cables and so on) that do not color the sound before it reaches the speakers.

For example, the design of and interaction between the hifi amplifier and its speaker load can and will alter the sound balance of what you hear. This may or may not be what you wish to achieve, but any deviation from a flat response is a step away from a truly neutral system. HUG has extensively discussed amplifiers and the methods for seeking the most objectively neutral among a plethora of product choices.

HUG specialises in making complex technical matters simple to understand, getting at the repeatable facts in a post-truth environment where objectivity is increasingly ridiculed. With our heritage of natural sound and pragmatic design, HUG is not the best place to discuss non-Harbeth audio components selected, knowingly or not, to introduce a significantly personalised system sound. For that you should do your own research and above all, make the effort to visit an Authorised Dealer and listen to your music at your loudness on your loudspeakers through the various offerings there. There is really no on-line substitute for time invested in a dealer's showroom because 'tuning' your system to taste is such a highly personal matter. Our overall objective here is to empower readers to make the factually best procurement decisions in the interests of lifelike music at home.

Please consider carefully how much you should rely upon and be influenced by the subjective opinions of strangers. Their hearing acuity and taste will be different to yours, as will be their motives and budget, their listening distance, loudness and room treatment, not necessarily leading to appropriate equipment selection and listening satisfaction for you. Always keep in mind that without basic test equipment, subjective opinions will reign unchallenged. With test equipment, universal facts and truths are exposed.

If some of the science behind faithfully reproducing the sound intended by the composer, score, conductor and musicians over Harbeth speakers is your thing, this forum has been helping with that since 2006. If you just want to share your opinions and photos with others then the unrelated Harbeth Speakers Facebook page http://bit.ly/2FEgoAy may be for you. Either way, welcome to the world of Harbeth!"

I measured my spades and I measure a little bit less than 7mm between the spades. I have these: Click image for larger version

Officialy as stated by Cardas they have 6mm or 1/4" spades. At least those most common that are on cable by default. Source is here: please click.
Could somebody be so kind to use caliper measurement tool (if you have of course) to measure a diameter of the Harbeth's binding posts where we can hook up the spades. I think it is not a big science . Thank you kindly in advance for this.

    Wish you best,
    Davor.

The speaker wire I have is a few years old and was made by Blue Circle Audio. At that time they used Cardas spade lugs. I measured them with a drafting ruler and they were 8mm.

I'm away in the UK for a month so perhaps someone else will be able to measure the posts for you.

You could file or bend the spades to fit or simply chop them off and bare wore them , I'm sure they cost too much but I wouldn't base speaker purchase on them , ; ) best of luck

I'll take a photo with dimensions of the standard Harbeth speaker terminal today if possible and make a new thread here to answer this once and for all.

            Hiya,

this will be very much appreciated Mr. Shaw! I'm just considering to buy SHL5 plus and I like to know all the details. I Hope I was not too annoying with my question.
I might have found the scheme of the binding post that is used in your speakers on the internet and I have a feeling that 1/4" Cardas spades will not fit. But might fit if I just stick one tip of the spade in the hole and then tighten. I might also buy and use Cardas spade to banana adapter (CAB). But ok that is again another contact and surface and I would like to avoid multiple surfaces and connectors.

@Tannitus, no I will not modify these cables as they have value if I might resale them at some point. They serve me also very good and I would like to keep them. Anyway cables will not obstruct me if I decide to pick up Harbeth speakers.

I will see, still need to decide and get some courage together to pull a trigger as I'm doing more or less on a blind as I don't have a chance to audition SHL5 plus.

            best, d.

            • Why worry?

Seems a shame to worry about the spades and delay purchase of the wonderful SHL5+ because the speakers are so good, you won't bother about connections any more.

Worst case with the Cardas spades is that you might need to do as you mention - just use one leg of the spade in the hole.

              • Made to measure cables

Alternatively, Blue Jeans Cable Company or similar - look for 10-12 AWG copper cable, and for less than you know, you might get a v good match indeed.

They can be made exactly to length, and be tinned at the amp end, and spades, plugs or bare wire left at the speaker end.

Thank you Mr. Shaw for this and just posted my thanks also there. I think I will have very musical holidays ahead of me as I just decided for beautiful SHL5+ in tiger ebony which will be arriving very soon too.

Hope I will receive a magic of music I was searching for all my life.
                    kind regards, d.

                      • Music, not hifi gear any more

Hi dave, yes I want exactly that . I just want to forget about my hi-fi equipment once and for all and just enjoy music. I'm coming from Anthony Gallo Reference 3.5 which I had for 5 years and now turned to Harbeth as something new and different. I wanted to do 180 degrees turn and make my system also more classic looking and simple. Will be connected to Gryphon Callisto 2200 and Musical Fidelity NuVista CD, so I hope for the best in that relation.

Will have them already tomorrow, but no time to connect them until the end of week; work . Probably I will post some pics and impressions later when all will be ready .
                        Have fun,
                        D
