HUG - here for all audio enthusiasts

The Harbeth User Group is the primary channel for public communication with Harbeth's HQ. If you have a 'scientific mind' and are curious about how the ear works, how it can lead us to make the right - and wrong - audio equipment decisions, and about the technical ins and outs of audio equipment, how it's designed and what choices the designer makes, then the factual Science of Audio sub-forum area of HUG is your place. The objective methods of comparing audio equipment under controlled conditions has been thoroughly examined here on HUG and elsewhere and should be accessible to non-experts and able to be tried-out at home without deep technical knowledge. From a design perspective, today's award winning Harbeths could not have been designed any other way.

Alternatively, if you just like chatting about audio and subjectivity rules for you, then the Subjective Soundings area is you. If you are quite set in your subjectivity, then HUG is likely to be a bit too fact based for you, as many of the contributors have maximised their pleasure in home music reproduction by allowing their head to rule their heart. If upon examination we think that Posts are better suited to one sub-forum than than the other, they will be redirected during Moderation, which is applied throughout the site.

Questions and Posts about, for example, 'does amplifier A sounds better than amplifier B' or 'which speaker stands or cables are best' are suitable for the Subjective Soundings area only, although HUG is really not the best place to have these sort of purely subjective airings.

The Moderators' decision is final in all matters and Harbeth does not necessarily agree with the contents of any member contributions, especially in the Subjective Soundings area, and has no control over external content.

That's it! Enjoy!

  • Active Harbeths - available and what support?

To clarify, although this has been discussed here before: Our policy on this subject is no secret and we here do everything we can to prevent the consumer being disappointed. We want happy customers so if you called the Harbeth UK office within the last two or three years (we do get the occasional call) about active Harbeths you would have been and will be told this ...
    .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ....................

    1) We do not currently offer active Harbeths for sale

    2) Any and all used/second hand active Harbeths are long out of Warranty

    3) We do not, and never have sold or offered any support, after care or service outside the UK mainland for these speakers. This was a policy decision due to complexity, weight and insurance.

    4) We have limited documentation available for servicing but cannot be involved in their servicing.

    5) There are no special cartons or packing crates available for actives. For example, every M40 active was hand made and hand delivered by Harbeth UK and cartons were not needed for the journey in our vehicle.

    6) Once in situ, the actives have been generally reliable, but as with all complex electronics settled in one place for many years, once they are moved agitated and disturbed, the reliability is much impaired. They may well leave the seller's place in working condition but by they time they have been thrown around in transit, they may not work properly on arrival.

    .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ....................

These are the facts, and we have and will continue to stress these to callers. If, after this advice, the consumer is tempted to buy at a low price seeing them as a cheap way to get a pair of high-end Harbeths (some do, this is what they tell us) then we sincerely hope that they function correctly and will continue to do so upon arrival. But that is completely outside of our control and support.

Again: we cannot support these old speakers as the parts are not available nor is service labour, custom made cartons, transport, insurance etc. cost effective for the buyer. Be very cautious.
    Harbeth PR,
    Harbeth UK

Re: Active Harbeths - available and what support?

If the active speaker is in the original studio where it was delivered, installed and commissioned we will of course, on a time, materials and travelling basis (against an official Purchase Order) attempt to maintain the speaker as we have always done.

      Hello Alan,

Just bought an active m30 but it is in a horrible condition and thx to the seller Ihad no idea that the mid speaker was torn and glued and one of the amps doesnt work and the other one has a hum. Anyway i would like to know if u have a spare mid speaker for my m30 and how much it would be? I already found a technician who could take care of the amps and after that i just have to restore the finish. A lot of work ahead of me bit the sound hopefully compensite all the efforts.

      Thank you
