BBC 3 High Resolution?

While browsing the classical music station list on my Apple TV I noticed BBC 3 Hi, and BBC 3 Lo. I assumed that this is the hi resolution feed. The sound was very good fed through a Musical Fidelity V-DAC. Does anyone know if this is the highest resolution feed?

BTW for classical lovers, 99.5 All Classical (WCRB) has added an all Boston Symphony Orchestra/Tanglewood, and a Baroque channel. They can be accessed through the 99.5 All Classical website.

Thanks for that. It transpires that the problem was my firewall - WGBH likes to use some slightly unusual ports.

The bit rate of all of the WGBH stuff seems a little on the low side, unfortunately.

Yes when I first tried it when I made the post it worked, but subsequently I get the "not available in your area" standard i-player message.
The AAC stream does work, but as I have a satellite RXCVR and a less than reliable internet connection, I use the Astra 3 feed. I'll have a comparative listen to the two feeds one day when the internet feed is solid.

As a matter of interest, things may have changed since, but live Outside Broadcasts were made using a dual 128Kbit ISDN connection using either musicam (mp3) coding or APT-X , so the bitrate from an OB was at best 256Kbit!

Hi Paul.

You are lucky to have the Sat Receiver. I would need a 4.3 metre dish to get UK TV in Cyprus. I have a reasonably fast cable internet connection in Nicosia with analogue TV in the package - but that only gives me BBC World and a few other channels that don't interest me. I use iPlayer and ITV Player over a VPN - works well - except when Flash crashes! An iPlayer HD download is excellent.

For radio I use a Squeezebox, feeding a Beresford Caiman DAC, and the BBC iPlayer Pluggin by Triode gets me the lot at the highest bitrates including "Listen Again".

If your internet connection improves it would be worth considering, but the satellite streams (at 192kb/s MP2) are fine.

I am presently listening to my latest discovery - Priory Radio - and that I have referenced in another thread. In a few weeks they should be streaming some fine Christmas music.

But I do envy your sat dish!

I can confirm that the Hi-res internet AAC stream does indeed sound better than the satellite feed, so perhaps a fast internet connection is the way to go. (saves building a radio telescope!)

I presume you are using the same DAC for both streams. The DAC in the Sat Box could be very poor. It was in mine - well mine was a Virgin Cable Box, but it used the same 192 kb/s MP2 stream. Running an optical link to a better DAC made a big difference. But yes, The 320kb/s AAC stream is a good bit better than the MP2 stream at 192 kb/s. MP2 is an old CODEC. MP3 at 128kb/s would probably better it, but it does depend a lot on how the signal is processed in the studio. Dynamic compression (as in the loudness wars) can kill the music very fast!

In general, if you want a very good range of high quality radio streams, a better internet connection is the way to go.

Squeezebox makes it very easy (if you are reasonably technical), but there are may other ways in.

The quality of the DAC is a very important factor. The DAC needs to be chosen with care, but need not cost a fortune.

They say the DAC in the Squeezebox Touch is excellent: I have not heard it.

Yes Labarum, the internet stream from the PC goes optically, and the satellite RXCVR goes sp-diff, BOTH into my Bryston DAC.

The satellite RXCVR is a Humax HD set to stereo out, and the PC can cope with up to 192/24bit streams / FLAC.

The Bryston will accept up to 192/24.
