You will notice that one picture is my old setup which includes also movies, ps3 and satellite tv but had the restriction of placing the Harbeths really close to the speaker wall. Just before the New Year we took the decision to isolate the pure-audio equipment so we had the liberty to place the speakers properly in the room, which as you can see from the photos sit a generous 1.3 meters (4ft. i believe? ) from the back wall. The change in soundstage for one is immense, favoring of course the new placement. The speakers are also symmetrically placed to the side walls, about 70cm, wall to woofer center. I am very favourable to *not* isolating the speaker from the side walls, as i believe this can induce a nice spacious-ness to the sound.
OTOH i think reflections from speaker wall might as well be entirely eliminated as they sort of blur what i imagine is the mid frequencies and removes 'definition' from the sound (as you will see my hifi-speak leaves a lot to the imagination!!!)
Thanks to the new speaker placement i am quite content with the sound one itsy little bit of an issue could be a harshness that is present when you play really loud so to remedy this (or just to find an excuse to buy something, really!) i will go for swapping the KT88 of my amp with EL34, which are supposed to be smoother but lacking in power.
Thank you all indeed for your kind words and best regards,
Nikolas
Hi all,
Picture of my set-up:
Speakers: Super HL5 30th Anniversary (Tiger Ebony)
Room size about 18ft x 9ft x ceiling height 8ft
Hope everyone can contribute as well.
Hi Gan CK,
Well, It has been about 3 hrs per day for 4 days of listeining sessions. I felt that the sound isn't right as compared to my previous speakers.
Recently went to visit local dealer to ask for his opinion. He said, "Give a few more days to 'run-in' a bit"
Well, today I played "TOTEM" with plenty of deep bass to 'run-in' for almost 6hrs. True enough, the soundstage, depth etc. has opened up. May be tonight i will do a serious listening session.
Picture of the CD I used
Audio in FLAC format >> Squeezebox 2 >> Lavry DA-10 >> Cary Audio SLI-80 Signature SE >> Harbeth Super HL5.
A couple of months ago I tried a used Exposure XXX integrated amplifier with the Super HL5. It sounded terrific! It was almost as good as the SLI80 and even had better punch than the SLI80. The part that the Exposure could not match up is in the midrange. The SLI80 evidently had better mid-range clarity and delicacy.
If I want a solid state amplifier to drive the Super HL5 you already know what I will be buying.

Thanks for the compliment. The grille is off only for the shoot. I always listen with the grille on. I use a bit of toe in for the SHL5. This is the dimension of my listening room.

The distributor in Malaysia bundled the stands with the SHL5. The stands are made from low-cost hollow steel tubes. I tried building better looking stands similar to this one here - http://www.harbeth.co.uk/usergroup/s...=1814#poststop
But eventually ended up back with the steel stands. Because they simply sound better than the wooden stuff. It may have something to do with the wood materials.
Hi all,
This is my first post here. I am one of the Harbeth user in Hong Kong. Below is my setup:

Hi,
Wow, nice set-up and the SHL5 looks beautiful. What type of veneer is that?
Any dfferance between the 30th Ann Edition and the Silver Signature Edition?
Is the SHL5 on Skyland speaker stands?
IMO, you can improve the soundstage and depth by covering your TV with portable diffisor.

Hello Jmohd,
Thanks a lot. Yes. I use Skylan for SHL5.
My SHL5 also Tiger Ebony finishing. But due to incorrect white balance of my DC, overall color tone of the picture become a bit in red.
For the TV cover treatment, I've tried some of the materials. More or less get improving in soundstage or depth, but also affecting overall tonal balance. So I give up at last. You know, there is not much room treatment choice in HK.
Jmohd, the size of my listening is almost same with yours in measurement, but your enviroment is much more professional that make Hong Kong users jelious your lovely places^^. Btw, How about the "run in" progress of your new Harbeth?
leekb,
i have just bought a pair of new SHL5 and i am still finding a good stands for them. so far i think open frame metal stands should fit my need more than wooden stands. and your photos just give me an excellent reference.
could you please send me a larger photo of your stands for my reference?
and tell me website or contact no. and email of the company which hand made the stands for your SHL5 so that i can contact them?
thanks
Ken
