"This Harbeth User Group (HUG) is the Manufacturer's own managed forum dedicated to natural sound from microphone to ear, achievable by recognising and controlling the numerous confounding variables that exist along the audio chain. The Harbeth designer's objective is to make loudspeakers that contribute little of themselves to the music passing through them.

Identifying system components for their sonic neutrality should logically proceed from the interpretation and analysis of their technical, objective performance. Deviations from a flat frequency response at any point along the signal chain from microphone to ear is likely to give an audible sonic personality to the system at your ear; this includes the significant contribution of the listening room itself. To accurately reproduce the recorded sound as Harbeth speakers are designed to do, you would be best advised to select system components (sources, electronics, cables and so on) that do not color the sound before it reaches the speakers.

For example, the design of and interaction between the hifi amplifier and its speaker load can and will alter the sound balance of what you hear. This may or may not be what you wish to achieve, but any deviation from a flat response is a step away from a truly neutral system. HUG has extensively discussed amplifiers and the methods for seeking the most objectively neutral among a plethora of product choices.

HUG specialises in making complex technical matters simple to understand, getting at the repeatable facts in a post-truth environment where objectivity is increasingly ridiculed. With our heritage of natural sound and pragmatic design, HUG is not the best place to discuss non-Harbeth audio components selected, knowingly or not, to introduce a significantly personalised system sound. For that you should do your own research and above all, make the effort to visit an Authorised Dealer and listen to your music at your loudness on your loudspeakers through the various offerings there. There is really no on-line substitute for time invested in a dealer's showroom because 'tuning' your system to taste is such a highly personal matter. Our overall objective here is to empower readers to make the factually best procurement decisions in the interests of lifelike music at home.

Please consider carefully how much you should rely upon and be influenced by the subjective opinions of strangers. Their hearing acuity and taste will be different to yours, as will be their motives and budget, their listening distance, loudness and room treatment, not necessarily leading to appropriate equipment selection and listening satisfaction for you. Always keep in mind that without basic test equipment, subjective opinions will reign unchallenged. With test equipment, universal facts and truths are exposed.

If some of the science behind faithfully reproducing the sound intended by the composer, score, conductor and musicians over Harbeth speakers is your thing, this forum has been helping with that since 2006. If you just want to share your opinions and photos with others then the unrelated Harbeth Speakers Facebook page may be for you. Either way, welcome to the world of Harbeth!"

                • Getting the best out of the M40.1 - room positioning

I have recently installed my 40.1. I thought I'd share a few thoughts on getting the best out of these (all opinions are entirely my own and from someone who knows little/nothing about the technicalities).

When I got these in to my room and fired them up I just thought they sounded terrible: horribly boomy and bloated with a recessed midrange. I simply couldn't believe it was the speakers or my equipment's fault. I am using Pass Labs, Herron Audio, PS Audio and SME.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, it was all down to the positioning in the room. Even subtle changes can make a massive difference. I eventually ended up positioning them according to the "Cardas method". I tried the "Get better sound" method and also the method recommended by "RealTraps" with frustrating results.

Now that they are positioned correctly they sound fabulous. I have a slightly annoying room (standing wave resonance) node- but there isn't much I can do about it.

I can confirm that these speakers can work well in a small room (18ft x 12ft), but you really need a dedicated room or, a very, very understanding wife and children who are angels.

                  • Room treatment - very important

                    Hi teddyboy,

Gongrats on you new Harbeth and nice looking room. BTW, I'm also using M40.1 and my room is smaller than yours. IMO, room treatment is very important among other things. Room treatment does affect the sound.

                    • Harbeth tonality across the range ....

Ted your Harbeth monitor 40.1 look very impressive set up in your music room.

Speaker placement is very important for the best sonic results in any room, I have found that with speakers that move a lot of air pressure in a room this is even more important.

Not every one is lucky enough to have a dedicated music room that we can acoustically treat with acoustic traps and reflection panels, the WAF comes into play that will usually put a end to this Idea!!

I have two rooms set up at Parmenter Sound for my Harbeth demonstrations, one treated Acoustically and one left as a normal living room environment. This helps my clients greatly to hear a normal music playback listening room and then experience a dedicated professionally treated music room with Acoustic Science Corporation & RealTraps acoustic treatments.

Both systems I think sound wonderful with in there own room settings, this is a result from the excellent voicing of the Harbeth loudspeakers and the work that Alan and the Harbeth team have put into the crossover design & speaker driver matching of each model.

I am saying these very positive comments about the Harbeth speakers not from being biased as the Harbeth NZ distributor but from a passionate music lover point of view, Tone is just right with the Harbeth speakers across the entire range.
                      Thanks Jason.

                      • Can't recommend the M40.1 highly enough ....

I have just installed my new Harbeth monitor 40.1 this morning, they have been playing now for 10 hours non stop.

First impression coming from listening to the Harbeth Monitor 30 which is a wonderful speaker in it own right, the Monitor 40.1 from the first note is just bigger in scale with added bass weight & dimension.

Music just flows from the Monitor 40.1 with a sense of ease with the Air Tight ATM 2 amplifier and Leben RS 100U preamplifier, the ATM-2 has 80 watts a channel output power on tap.

Bass is very well controlled with excellent depth and texture with Double bass and Piano, voices are very natural, all round I can not recommend the Monitor 40.1 speakers highly enough.
                        Thanks Jason.

                        • No Tiger Ebony for Turkey

good news: my M40.1 will have been shipped in November 2011,
bad news: there is no tiger-ebony veneer coming to Turkey.

                          • M40.1 room size OK?

                            Hi guys,

Im wondering what room size you have placed your M40.1 in ? any issues with boominess, etc ?
Im using SHL5 now for many years & love it. Just thinking of adding an M40.1 into my harbeth family.
                            My room is 16 feet x 19 feet x 9 feet ceiling.

                            • Removed now can't refit grille

i use my 40.1 without the grilles. yesterday i tried to put the grilles on just to get an alternative look in my room. the problem: i donīt know why but one of the grilles doesīt fit in the frame! itīs just a little "larger" on one corner than the groove where it should fit in.
                              what would you do?

                              • Swap around?

Maybe you have swopped left with right grille ? Try swopping them round.
